Around the time of the Kyoho Reforms, a 15-year-old man killed his uncle and fled from Osaka to Kyoto. After he became a beggar on the riverside, he became a temple servant under the monk Benku. The man who became interested in painting and haikai at the temple decided to leave Kyoto and head for Edo. In Edo, he became a disciple of the master of haikai, Soa, and called himself Saicho. However, soon after Soa died, he went to Yuki in Shimousa, where he traveled to Oshu and the northern Kanto region. At the age of 28, he changed his haigo to Buson and devoted himself to painting, haiku and calligraphy.
